This Saturday, 18th May, is International Museum Day, a day when museums around the world plan a wide range of special events and activities. In 2018, more than 40,000 centres from some 158 countries took part. The map below includes some of the events scheduled in Catalonia and beyond.
Since 2011, there has also been the related European Night of Museums, which tends to be the most important in Catalonia. Many museums are open late into the night, offering free entry and special events, which can include guided visits, even taking you into areas normally closed to the public. Other places will have offerings of gastronomy, concerts, theatre, activities for kids, etc.
The Catalan government has a timetable (in Catalan) of all 300 activities scheduled around Catalonia. Barcelona city council has prepared its own (in Catalan) for the 100 or so near the city. Events for the Night of Museums start at 7pm, when the centres would normally be shutting up for the day, and in many cases last until 1 in the morning.
