Waiting for the workers of the security company at Barcelona's El Prat airport to ratify or not the preliminary agreement that Eulen has already accepted, following the mediation by the Ministry of Labour, and after many days without an official explanation from those really responsible for the chaos that is happening, the semi-public company Aena, it is worthwhile recapitulating. And pointing it out.
First: it has not been explained why the Spanish government has allowed the situation to deteriorate to extremes that seriously damage the image of Barcelona and Catalonia. The infrastructure is theirs, the security forces, the Civil Guard and the National Police, too, as well as the management of the airport. In the entire chain of the Ministry of Fomento (Public Works & Transport) and Aena, could nobody have intervened in the matter weeks ago?
Second: it has not been explained why all the problems have been concentrated at El Prat airport again, in the same way it occurred with the passport control last May. Nor why there continue to be queues of up to an hour at dawn each day, with passengers losing their flights and inexplicable crowding even on the days when there is no strike. This week there was only one strike on Monday.
Third: it has not been explained why Eulen managed to replace the airport security management, Prosegur, with clearly an inferior service, whilst increasing profits. Meanwhile, Micaela Núñez Feijóo, an executive at Eulen and the sister of the president of the Xunta of Galicia, Alberto Núñez Feijóo: silence.
Fourth: it has not been explained why, with almost the same number of passengers as Madrid's Barajas airport - 50.4m last year, with 44.1m at El Prat - that the security at Barajas costs €21.7m per year, and at El Prat it costs €12m. And with figures like that, of course Barajas doesn't have any problems.
Fifth: it has not been explained why El Prat generates profits of €340m, just over 50% of Aena's earnings (€651.6m), and Barajas only €27.5m. A worse service, less investment, yet more profits. With this explanation, who would relinquish the ownership of El Prat airport to the Catalan government?
