This Monday morning much of metropolitan Barcelona woke up in white. Snow fell overnight in coastal parts of Catalonia, beginning in the counties of northern Girona and moving south-west to coat many of the higher parts of greater Barcelona, before reaching Tarragona, where it snowed on the beaches.    

And the same routine is set for a repeat overnight between Monday and Tuesday! Further snowfalls are forecast for the counties of Girona down to sea-level, also affecting many other parts of Catalonia, with extreme cold, strong winds and heavy seas. Below, our forecast for the hours ahead and the best images and videos of this Monday's Catalonia snowfalls. 

 

 

More snow in Catalonia

Tuesday will begin with further snowfall on the coast and the Prelitoral coastal mountains. Although the snow level in general will be around 200 metres, in some cases it will again reach sea level. Temperatures will fall sharply overnight this Monday, with mnimums of -20ºC in the Pyrenees, and below zero in much of the country. The snow and rain, however, will disappear quickly as Tuesday morning progresses and the sun will come out in much of Catalonia. Strong winds at both extremes of the country: from Cap de Creus in the north to the Delta in the south.

And the weather for the rest of the week?

From this Wednesday, March 1st, the weather in Catalonia will be increasingly stable with the sun dominant. Daytime temperatures will slowly rise as the week progresses. However, take care because Wednesday there will still be un fred que pelarà - brass monkey weather, or to translate  it literally, "a cold that will skin you". And the nights will continue to be below zero for quite a few days. On Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, there'll be foggy dawns in the interior counties of Catalonia, reducing visibility on the highways. For the first weekend in March, you can expect sun throughout Catalonia with maximum temperatures of 17 or 18ºC in most towns. At night, though, the cold will still be notable with lows of -3 or -4ºC in the interior and between 2 and 5ºC on the coast. So keep wrapping up warm - you might plenty warm under a blue sky at midday, but warm clothing will be essential immediately that the sun is set.
