Attorney and Native American rights activist Brett A Chapman has reacted to comments by Spain's foreign minister, Josep Borrell, that, before independence, the United States of America had "practically no history, the only thing they'd done was kill a handful of Indians".
After quoting what he describes as a "shocking idiocy", Chapman asks "what's the matter with this man?".
Chapman, as it happens, had just a day earlier posted a tweet about Native Americans who were among the millions who died directly or indirectly as a result of the actions of colonists and European Americans.
Indeed, it was in response to this tweet that lawyer Gonzalo Boye told Chapman of Borrell's comments.
Chapman replied describing it as a "deplorable statement and an intentional slight to Native Americans".
Catalan president in exile Carles Puigdemont later quoted Chapman's tweet, say that “what's the matter with this man?” is "exactly the same question most Catalans ask themselves".
