Barcelona-El Prat Airport, with 5,041,652 passengers this July, was only 46,257 short of equalling Madrid-Barajas Airport's total for the same month of 5,087,909 users. For El Prat, this represented an 8% increase on passengers compared with the same month last year whilst Barajas saw a substantially smaller increase of 3.7%.
Thus, in the first seven months of the year, the airport for the Catalan capital has totalled some 27.1 million users, 8.4% that in the same period of 2016. Domestic passengers have seen the greatest increase, specifically 10%, whilst international ones have grown 7%.
Regarding international routes, the number of passengers for flights to Asia and the Pacific grew 109.5%, followed by those for Latin America (+31.6%) and North America (+22.8%). Looking at the number of operations, the seventh month of the year closed with 32,129 movements, 3.9% more than the previous year, with a more significant growth in national routes (+6.4%) than international ones. So far this year, operations at Barcelona airport have passed 185,000, which represents a year-on-year increase of 4.7%.
Finally, regarding cargo, this also continues growing. In July, 13,705 metric tons of merchandise were transported, 31.6% more than in the same month in 2016. This year 85,702 tons have been transported so far, 16.1% more than in the same period last year.
