The speaker of the Catalan Parliament, Roger Torrent, has this Tuesday talked to the Council of Europe commissioner for human rights, Dunja Mijatović, about Spain's "violation [of rights] and democratic regression". In a meeting with the commissioner and her team in Strasbourg, Torrent asked her to continue monitoring "the violation of fundamental rights" and "systematically" follow the "attack" on freedoms in Spain.
He also asked her to visit the imprisoned pro-independence leaders to learn about their situation first hand. According to Torrent, he found the commissioner "very receptive" and she passed on her "firm intention" to visit Spain.
On the subject of a potential visit, the speaker gave no specific date, but did say it will be after this month's European and local elections.
