Mariano Rajoy's government destroyed all the documents it had related to the Catalan independence referendum before Pedro Sánchez arrived in the Moncloa government palace last summer as the new prime minister. As such, the new Spanish executive is unable to confirm any of the testimony being offered to the current trial in the Supreme Court.
According to newspaper OkDiario, PSOE discovered when they took office that the computers had been wiped and that all documents referring to the referendum had been shredded on the order of the outgoing teams, one of the most significant parts of wider deletions.
As such, all documentation relating to discussions between the Spanish and Catalan governments has reportedly disappeared, as has any on the police or political decisions taken at the time.
