The pro-independence union Intersindical-CSC has called a general strike for Friday 21st December from 12:30 to 2:30pm. This is to coincide with the meeting of the Spanish cabinet in Barcelona on the first anniversary of last year's Catalan election. Union sources have told ACN that the strike is for economic and social reasons, since the new Spanish government hasn't withdrawn the executive order issued by its predecessors last year making it easier for companies to move their registered headquarters from Catalonia, nor have they overturned their labour reform, among other factors.
Among other items on the agenda that day, the cabinet is expected to raise the minimum monthly wage to 900 euros (£801; $1025). Intersindical-CSC believes that level to be insufficient, arguing for a minimum of 1,200€.
At the same time, union sources note that many social laws approved by the Catalan Parliament "remain annulled". For all these reasons, as confirmed by the Catalan labour ministry, the union has registered a strike for the 21st of this month.
