Diego Pérez de los Cobos, the Civil Guard colonel that the Public Prosecutor has dictated should assume sole command to coordinate the work of the Mossos d'Esquadra (Catalan police), Civil Guard and the Spanish National Police, was prosecuted for torturing an ETA prisoner. ETA was a Basque separatist terrorist group.
He was accused of mistreating an inmate who was in hospital after having been already attacked once, and of covering his nose and mouth. In the end he was exonerated, along with two of his colleagues.
Another detail is that his brother is Francisco Pérez de los Cobos, a former member of PP (Popular Party) and president of the Constitutional Court from 2011 to 2017. During his presidency, the Court declared unconstitutional and null the decree calling the 2014 unofficial Catalan independence referendum.
For his part, their father, also called Francisco Pérez de los Cobos, was a candidate for the Fuerza Nueva (New Force), a far-right political party in the elections to the Spanish Congress in 1977, the first democratic elections. He was fourth on the list of candidates for Murcia, however the party didn't even get one seat.
