Begoña Gómez, wife of Spanish prime minister Pedro Sánchez, has tested positive for coronavirus. The Spanish leader and his wife announced this on Saturday night from the prime ministerial residence in Madrid, saying that they both "feel well, will remain at home in the Moncloa palace and will at all times follow the prevention measures established by the health authorities". Gómez's positive result to a Covid-19 test is in addition to those already registered by two Spanish cabinet ministers - equality minister Irene Montero, and territorial policy minister Carolina Darias - along with other prominent political figures in the Spanish capital, such as Javier Ortega Smith, deputy leader of the Vox party.
Prime ministerial sources say that the analyses carried out in the last few hours at the Moncloa palace on the people closest to the Spanish prime minister yielded a positive result in a test given to Sánchez's spouse, and that she is well and following preventive measures. As for Montero and Darias, the Spanish executive states that "both are at home and their health is good." The news was announced shortly after Sanchez's appearance this Saturday evening to tell Spaniards the details of his government's decree of a state of alarm.
Meanwhile, Pablo Iglesias, partner of Irene Montero, leader of the Podemos party and one of Spain's four deputy prime ministers, personally attended today's marathon meeting of the Spanish cabinet on the worsening coronavirus crisis, despite being in quarantine himself due to his wife's illness.
