Trade unions play a large role in Denmark's labour market, and one of the largest and most influential is DJØF, an association for academics including lawyers and economists. Now they have organised a debate in Copenhagen (link in Danish) under the title Catalonia - offence or abuse of power? for 11th June. "Has the local Catalan government broken the law? Or is it the central power in Madrid that is abusing its power?" they ask.
The organisers ask what the causes were for the images of violence during last year's referendum which were seen around the globe, "scenes which reminded of civil war conditions". They plan to analyse the situation of human rights and the legal debate arisen from the Catalan process.
Among those participating will be Dr Frederik Harhoff, human rights expert and former member of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia; Peter Vedel Kessing, human rights expert and lecturer at the Faculty of Law, Copenhagen University, doctor of law Jordi Jaria and former Spanish Constitutional Court judge Joaquin Pablo Urías.
DJØF is, according to the European e-Justice portal, "Denmark’s largest trade union and interest organisation for students and employees in the fields of law, administration, state governance, research, education, communication, economics, political and social science". The association's website says it represents "approximately 92,000 members working at all levels of the private and public sectors".
Carles Puigdemont took part in an event at the end of January at Copenhagen University to explain the situation in Catalonia. It was the first time the president in exile had left Belgium since travelling to Brussels at the end of October after the proclamation of the Catalan Republic and the Spanish government's intervention in Catalonia.
