Some 140 workers from the European institutions have sent a letter to the president of the Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, calling on him to "denounce the violence in Catalonia" and "strongly express the need to respect citizens' fundamental rights". In the document, the workers emphasis the sadness caused by the images of police violence and explain they were "shocked to see images of the disproportionate use of violence by the Spanish police against European citizens who were, peacefully, trying to express a political opinion".
One of the things that has most disappointed the EU staff is that the organisation "has always denounced any violation of human rights around the world", but hasn't "shown the same leadership" internally with Catalonia. They also say that, despite having different opinions on Catalonia and Spain, "political topics have to be solved peacefully and democratically" concluding that "any attempt to prevent the exercise of fundamental political rights through violence is totally unacceptable".
