Far-right Spanish party Vox will play a key role in an event in the European Parliament on 6th March. A promotional poster for the event has been released which describes the Catalan independence push as an attempted "coup d'état".
Those set to speak at the event include the party's secretary general, Javier Ortega, as keynote speaker. their spokesperson in Catalonia, Jorge Buxadé, and their vice-president for institutional relations in the Balearic Islands, Malena Contestí. The event will be called "Catalonia, a Spanish region".
Vox says that Spain, "a democracy where everybody may stand up for their beliefs, is facing one of its most important legal challenges since the approval of [its] constitution in 1978".
"After decades of political inaction", the poster says, "a coup d'état was attempted in one of the Spanish regions, with the intention of breaking away from the country's territorial integration".
Vox's members have been invited to the Parliament by Polish MEP Kosma Złotowski. Złotowski is a member of PiS, the right-wing populist Euro-sceptic party currently in government in Warsaw.
The same MEP had previously travelled with 9 colleagues to Melilla, a Spanish autonomous city on the African coast at the invite of Vox. The far-right party wanted to explain one of its manifesto pledges: to replace the fence between Melilla and Morocco with a concrete wall.
Just today, Catalan presidents Torra and Puigdemont had been invited by MEPs to the Parliament themselves, an event cancelled by officials over cited "security concerns".
The description of next month's event ends calling people to come in order to "understand the real story of Spain". Also scheduled to speak are the historian Jesús Lainz and the editor-in-chief of right-wing channel Intereconomia, Rosa Cuervas.
