Another veto from the European Parliament towards another Catalan event. This time, the chamber has suspended an exhibition on the Catalan language planned for 4th March, saying it is "no longer appropriate" given the snap Spanish general election at the end of April. The exhibition was scheduled for two days before an event with far-right party Vox which is currently still happening.
Last week, Parliament officials stopped an event scheduled for today to involve Catalan presidents Quim Torra and Carles Puigdemont, citing "security concerns".
"The Catalan language, 10 million European voices" was organised by the Plataforma per la Llengua (Platform for the Language) and MEP Ramon Tremosa (PDeCAT). Tremosa has expressed his regret at the chamber's decision.
Translation: Just today, a Vox event in the European Parliament has been announced, also in the pre-electoral period: censorship and double standards are becoming widespread in this Europe kidnapped by the far right.
Translation: The European Parliament also censors an exhibition on Catalan. The chamber cancels "The Catalan language: 10 million voices" after having tried to censor its content, claiming the proximity of the Spanish election.
In a series of emails seen by ACN (Catalan News Agency), the team of MEP Catherine Bearder, in charge of evaluating exhibitions, claimed the drafted panels included "biased" information which was "provocative in the current political climate" and called for changes to be made.
Now, the decision has been taken to suspend the exhibition. Tremosa has been given the possibility to hold it "at another moment" and if they "present new material".
