German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine has today published statements from the Speaker of the Catalan Parliament, Carme Forcadell, saying that "Europe can no longer look away" from the Catalan conflict. She criticises the EU's inaction and says that they need to consider the fact that there are now political prisoners in Spain, referring to Jordi Sànchez and Jordi Cuixart. Forcadell criticises them for ignoring the "obvious violation of fundamental rights in one of [Europe's] member states".
Forcadell explains that a large part of Catalan society is wondering "for how much longer the European institutions will ignore the flagrant violation of fundamental rights", citing the police violence during the 1st October referendum as part of a "spiral of suppression".
The speaker says that, after the arrests of Sànchez and Cuixart for calling a demonstration, "European institutions can no longer refer to it as an internal [Spanish] matter". Forcadell also criticises Rajoy for rejecting dialogue and not "seeking a political solution for a political conflict".
