The trial following the 2017 Catalan independence push hasn't just sparked public interest in Catalonia and Spain, but also internationally. According to French public radio station France Culture (link in French), it "could well rekindle the conflict between Madrid and Barcelona":
The "highly anticipated trial", which independence supporters are already calling a "political trial", will start "more than a year after the self-determination referendum organised on 1st October 2017 in Catalonia".
As part of their ongoing series on "justice in the political arena", the broadcaster has dedicated 40 minutes of an hour-long episode to Catalonia, including a report and debate with experts.
In the text accompanying the podcast of the episode (linked above), they also describe the current situation: "nine of [the pro-independence leaders], currently in pretrial detention, will face trial soon. They have to respond to charges of rebellion, sedition and misuse of public funds for having organised this consultation, deemed illegal by the Constitutional Court. Some risk up to 25 years in prison".
