Former president of the Catalan National Assembly and current Junts per Catalunya Parliament deputy Jordi Sànchez has accepted Carles Puigdemont's suggestion that he replace him as candidate to the presidency of Catalonia. Sànchez tweeted his acceptance shortly after Puigdemont's speech this evening.
"It's a great honour and an enormous responsibility to be able to represent the people of Catalonia. President Carles Puigdemont, vice-president Oriol Junuqeras, together with all the ministers dismissed by [article] 155 [of the Spanish Constitution] are the true legitimate government of Catalonia. Always with you! #freedom," he wrote. Sànchez has now been held in pretrial detention in Soto del Real prison near Madrid for over four months.
#llibertat https://t.co/x5kJjhSedY
