In Catalonia, the coronavirus continues to be under control and in slow decline. This Monday, the Catalan health ministry reported 644 new positive cases and no deaths. The percentage of people having received at least a first vaccination dose now exceeds 36.7%. The situation in hospitals - always a key indicator of when measures may need to be toughened to control patient pressure on the system - is also returning to levels not seen since last October. Total hospital places occupied by Covid-19 patients are now at 741  - 41 fewer than yesterday, although it should be kept in mind that on weekends there are no discharges. The peak number of coronavirus cases in Catalan hospitals for the last six months was reached on January 24th, with 3,038. Intensive care Covid patients drop from 256 to 253, three fewer. The broad ICU patient trends are shown below:

The outbreak risk is at 107, up three. The Rt or transmission rate is 0.98, up 0.03. That is, every 100 people with the virus will infect 98 more. Thus, we remain narrowly below 1, the figure to keep transmission under control. The cumulative incidence in the last 14 days is 109.96 per 100,000 inhabitants, a figure that is declining.

Coronavirus infections and deaths

As for new coronavirus infections in Catalonia, the figure as June begins is 644, above 500. It should be noted, however, that fewer tests are carried out at weekends. On Monday 440 were reported, on Sunday 954, Saturday 900, Friday 1,090, Thursday 980 and Wednesday 743 - figures that oscillate every week.

The total number of people infected since the beginning of the pandemic in Spain is 683,078. The positivity index stands at 3.96%, and hence below the 5% limit set by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a good indicator of whether a country has the pandemic under control. Between 8th and 14th May, the figure stood at 4.05%, and between 15th and 21st May it fell to 3.66%.

In relation to the number of deaths from coronavirus, the total figure since March 2020 rises to 22,182 fatalities. Eleven have been notified in the last few hours. According to the Covid data portal, no deaths were reported this Monday. The last day no deaths were reported was July 5th 2020.
