NATO's Secretary General, Jens Stoltenberg, has argued that the Catalan situation "has to be resolved within the constitutional order of Spain" after Catalan president Carles Puigdemont's speech to the Parliament yesterday declaring suspended independence. Stoltenberg emphasised Spain's "important" contributions to collective security. He said that "the Spanish state is a committed ally which has made important contributions to our shared security".
Similarly, the new US ambassador to NATO, Kay Bailey Hutchinson, warned on 5th October about the position of President Trump's administration which supports Spain's territorial unity. She said, however, that the political case of Catalonia "isn't a question for NATO".
