Facing the "atrocity" implied by article 155 of the Spanish Constitution and the ensuing intervention in Catalan autonomy, pro-independence organisation Òmnium Cultural believes there is no turning back: independence has to be declared. The statement was made by their spokesperson and accidental leader, Marcel Mauri, after this Thursday's meeting, where the organisation debated its response to the application of article 155. "Tomorrow the [Catalan] Parliament will have to take the relevant decisions based on the mandate from the 1st October, proclaim independence and resist the onslaught from the [Spanish] state via article 155".
Mauri described the measures agreed by the Spanish cabinet last Saturday as an "atrocity". He noted that the Catalan government's last offer of dialogue this Thursday received "the same answer as always". The proclamation of independence, he argued, also would serve to "put the breaks on the spiral of repression that we've seen this week and which we've experienced personally at the [Catalan National] Assembly and Òmnium", in reference to the imprisonment of their leaders Jordi Sànchez and Jordi Cuixart.
Under the slogan, Fem República ("let's make a Republic"), the pro-independence organisations have this week made a call for a gathering in front of the Catalan Parliament this Friday at 12pm, at the same time that the Parliament will reenter session to debate and vote on its response to article 155.
