Spain's governing Partido Popular has asked the president of the European Parliament, Antonio Tajani, to forbid Catalan president Carles Puigdemont from entering the chamber. In a letter, PP's leader in Brussels, Esteban González Pons, has asked the chamber to ban Puigdemont because there is an "search and arrest warrant" active against him in Spain for "breaking the law" and he has "escaped his criminal responsibilities, hiding in another country".
Junts per Catalunya sources in Brussels note that Carles Puigdemont "is a free citizen" in Belgium and "can go wherever he wants". "For now", however, the group's leader has no plans to try to enter the Parliament. "They're not asking Belgium to hand him over but want him banned?" they said. According to the PP, however, the European Parliament shouldn't allow Puigdemont to enter "under any circumstances".
