Catalan president Quim Torra and Spanish prime minister Pedro Sánchez talked by phone this morning and agreed to meet in person once the new Spanish government is in place. Statements from both their offices say the conversation took place at 9:30am this morning, lasted seven minutes and was "cordial at all times".
Staff for the two leaders agreed yesterday for the call to take place this morning. According to the Catalan government, Torra told Sánchez that the meeting will have to give them an opportunity to "put on track the negotiating table". Those talks, involving the two governments, to find a solution to the Catalan conflict were part of the agreement under which ERC abstained on the Sánchez investiture vote, allowing him to return as prime minister.
For the moment, it's not been specified whether the meeting will take place in Madrid or Barcelona. From the Moncloa palace in the Spanish capital, they've emphasised that Sánchez has told Torra that "on the one hand he wants to restart and take up the dialogue and, on the other, he has a sincere wish to try to solve the political conflict in Catalonia."
The last conversation between the two leaders came on 17th December when, during the talks for his investiture, Sánchez announced an unprecedented round of calls to the presidents of the autonomous communities. They have met twice. The first in Madrid in July 2018; the second in Barcelona on 20th December that year.
