The Catalan government has just published the definitive results of the 1st October independence referendum: 90.18% 'yes', 7.83% 'no'. These results are based on the count of only verified, non-confiscated ballot papers. In other words, the totals would have been different if the police hadn't acted to seize ballot boxes.
The statistics show a turnout of 43.03%, 2,286,217 voters out of a total of 5,313,564 eligible.
In total, there were 2,044,038 votes in favour of independence, 90.18% whilst 'no' received 177,547 votes. As for blank votes, there were 44,913, 1.98%. 19,719 votes were considered null.
The results show higher turnout at the polling stations where there was no police repression. In fact, in the centres where the day passed normally, turnout was above 50%.
Percentages of 'yes' and 'no' by vegueria:
"Vegueries" are a historical division of Catalonia, smaller than the modern provinces, made up of different counties.
With the declaration of the official results, the 48 hours given by the Referendum Law to propose the new Catalan republic have started to count down. This runs to Tuesday afternoon, exactly when the Catalan Parliament is to meet, as the weekend doesn't count in the time.
