The judge investigating the attacks during last year's Catalan independence referendum has today placed under investigation Roger Español, who lost an eye to a rubber bullet fired by Spanish police that day. Such weapons have been banned in Catalonia since 2014.
The judge has summonsed Español to testify under investigation, saying he has a recording showing him throwing a metal barrier towards National Police officers trying to stop voting at Barcelona's Ramon Llull school, before he was shot.
Deputy mayor of Barcelona Jaume Asens expressed regret that "one of the plaintiffs should be placed under investigation" and expressed hope that the facts "are clarified and this status is removed".
