A week after pro-independence leaders were sentenced by Spain's Supreme Court to a total of 100 years in jail, the protests show few signs of losing momentum. Today, tens of thousands of people have tweeted using the hashtag #SpainSitAndTalk, turning it into the top trending topic on Twitter worldwide. The call came from Catalan pro-independence platform Tsunami Democràtic to post tweets with the hashtag from 8pm local time this evening (UTC +2).

Within minutes, it had hit the top of the worldwide trending list, moving past other hashtags about topics like the protests in Chile and the Canadian general election taking place today. The hashtag expresses the Catalan movement's call for the Spanish government to sit down and talk with its Catalan counterpart to find a solution to the current political conflict through "dialogue and respect".
