Former Spanish prime minister José María Aznar has joined Latham & Watkins, the world's highest-grossing law firm. Spanish business daily Expansión, which broke the news, says that Aznar will join the company in March as an international advisor.
Aznar's hiring comes thanks to Juan Picón, formerly co-president of DLA Piper where he worked as a senior advisor to the former prime minister. Picón joined Latham & Watkins at the end of 2017, since when he has promoted hiring Aznar.
The former politician's new role is aimed at helping reinforce the firm's position in Latin America, one of the most desired destinations for this type of company.
Aznar's hiring is the first of its kind of Latham & Watkins. Previously, the law firm had no other external figures as advisors to its worldwide council.
