Spanish national train operator RENFE is to cancel some 360 trains this Friday 30th August and Sunday 1st September in the face of strike action by the union CGT. The strikes involve two daily walkouts, between midday and 4pm and between 8pm and midnight.
The Spanish public works ministry has ordered minimum services to enable travellers to get where they need to go. AVE and High Speed trains will run at 78% of their normal frequency, Middle Distance at 65%. As for local Rodalies train in Catalonia, they will fall to 40% of normal service. RENFE says that passengers with tickets bought in advance for cancelled services can change them or get refunds at no additional cost from their stations.
Separately, ground staff from the airline Iberia will strike this Friday 30th August and Saturday 31st August at Barcelona-El Prat and Madrid-Barajas airports. As a result, the company has decided to cancel 104 flights, all of which are either to or from the Spanish capital, with three of them each day being from Barcelona. The action has also led stablemate airline Vueling to cancel 92 flights to or from Barcelona. The roughly 14,000 passengers affected have already been informed and offered refunds or help finding alternative options.
