The letter from the president of the European Parliament, Antonio Tajani, replying to Carles Puigdemont and Toni Comín asking to be allowed to take their seats as MEPs, notes that Spain did not include their names in the list of those elected it sent to Strasbourg. As such, he says, he is "currently not in a position to treat you as future Members of the European Parliament".
Tajani explains that "it appears that your names are not on the list of elected members officially communicated to the European Parliament by Spanish authorities". He says that Parliament rules state that it takes note of the results as communicated to it, and that, in the first instance, it falls to national courts to hear any related matters.
This Wednesday, Puigdemont and Comín had, through a press statement, publicly accused Tajani of shirking his responsibilities by refusing to respond to any of the four letters they had sent him accusing Spain of "irregularities" in the process of designating its MEPs following the election.
