The new Catalan president, Quim Torra, wanted to mark the 8-month anniversary of the independence referendum. He noted it had coincided with the "fall" of the government which deployed the police in the streets of Catalonia that day. In a tweet, he said the referendum had given them a "republican mandate which we have to abide by".

Translation: Today marks 8 months since the self-determination referendum in Catalonia. And today the government which sent the police against the citizens who were exercising the right to vote has fallen. We continue. We have a republic mandate which we have to fulfil.
