TV3, the Catalan language station, will broadcast this Saturday's demonstration to the world, even though the Spanish state had tried to make it TVE, the national public broadcaster, that took charge of transmitting the images internationally. The protest is to take place in central Barcelona under the motto No tinc por, "I'm not afraid".
Such broadcasts are normally the responsibility of the organisers, in this case the Catalan government and Barcelona City Council. However, Spain has used the scope and international resonance of the event to argue that it should be TVE in charge this time.
TV3's management, however, has made it clear that they will follow the usual work dynamic and will broadcast the signal via the Hispasat satellite so that any stations that wish to can connect to it.
The Catalan channel says that they have not received any notification from TVE's management on this subject, but that, in any case, even if they decide to broadcast the demonstration via Eurovisión, this would not change TV3's decision.
The pressure from the Spanish state in relation to this subject has provoked a CUP (Popular Unity Candidacy) press officer to take to Twitter to denounce the attempts to control the broadcast and the images of the event.
Translation: The [Spanish] state's pressure over the demo #NoTincPor has reached the point of demanding the international signal be provided by TVE instead of TV3.
The aim is this... [Translator's note: the attached picture is a screenshot of TVE's broadcast of last week's minute's silence. On the left is PM Rajoy, on the right King Felipe VI. See the next paragraph.]
Indeed, the responsibility for the broadcast is not an anecdotal detail. TVE's broadcast of the minute's silence last Saturday placed Catalan president, Carles Puigdemont, out of the frame, only showing King Felipe VI and the prime minister, Mariano Rajoy, provoking protests online.
