A woman involved in a fight in Barcelona's Ciutadella park on Saturday has filed a complaint with the Spanish police for injuries and a hate crime. As the incident happened in Catalonia, it would have been more normal to file a report with the Mossos d'Esquadra, the Catalan police force, but she decided to go to the Spanish police instead. Specifically, she went to the Verneda police station, taking with her the medical report on the injuries she suffered.
According to police sources, the woman explained that she was attacked for removing yellow loops and that the attacker also insulted her for being originally from abroad, from Russia. Both sides had previously said the attack wasn't politically motivated. It had also been confirmed she didn't suffer a broken nose, as some sources reported initially.
The other person involved in the fight had previously filed a complaint against the woman with the Mossos d'Esquadra. The two complaints will be taken up by the same court of instruction. It will be the judge there who decides if they should both be taken over by one or other of the police forces, or whether the case will be taken forward without further direct police involvement.
