Txell Bonet, the partner of jailed Catalan political prisoner Jordi Cuixart, has told a Finnish newspaper that the couple's son, 18 months old, believes that Lledoners prison is Jordi's house.
The article, published by leading Finnish daily Helsingin Sanomat, explains how Cuixart, leader of the pro-independence civil group Òmnium Cultural, together with the ex-president of the ANC, Jordi Sànchez, have now been in held in jail preventively for over a year. The newspaper relates that Txell Bonet "has visited her partner in prison every week". In the interview, Bonet gives the details of what visitor contact with prisoners is like. She says that they are able to talk through a thick glass window for 40 minutes, once a week.
Bonet tells the newspaper that "they bring toys to the prison and the boy and his father play during the brief time that they have". Even though Cuixart has not directly seen his son as he has grown, and nor has he spent time with him as has begun to talk, eat or take his first steps, Bonet affirms that the boy recognizes his father "thanks to these moments in prison".
In the interview, carried out by phone, Bonet says that, even though Cuixart "feels deprived of his freedom, he is not sad". She also says that she feels "proud of her partner and of Catalonia", and she trusts that Cuixart's imprisonment "could help to change people's beliefs and convictions". "It is not normal that in the 21st century there are political prisoners being held for their opinions", asserts Bonet to the Finnish newspaper.
