Nine MPs from the Danish Parliament have made a call for the Catalan political prisoners to be released. OOn Thursday morning, the nine staged a protest on the steps of the Danish Parliament, the Folketing, with a banner reading "Freedom for Catalan political prisoners". Representatives of three different political parties took part in the action, which was initiated by pro-Catalan independence groups ANC Denmark, the CDR Copenhagen and Pelle Dragsted, MP for the Enhedlisten Copenhaguen party.
MP Pelle Dragsted stated his consternation that at present there are political prisoners being held in Europe. "For Catalan politicians to have been in preventive detention for a year is unacceptable", the Danish parliamentarian said, wearing a yellow ribbon on his jacket.
Dragsted commented that several years ago the Danish Parliament made a declaration urging the Spanish and Catalan government to enter into negotiation on the future of Catalonia. "Unfortunately, the Danish government, like many other European governments, is very timid", he said, and they do not want to intervene in the Catalan question. He explained that some weeks ago he asked Danish foreign minister Anders Samuelsen in parliament, "about the Catalan political prisoners" and his answer was that it was "an internal Spanish matter" and it was not appropriate to get involved.
