Two thousand chains have been stretched across the Onyar river in the city of Girona this weekend in a massive installation erected to symbolize “the state's repression against Catalonia”. Nearly 200 people took part in mounting the huge outdoor installation, which also includes flags and symbols that represent Spain on one side of the river, and on the other bank, more than 300 panels to evoke those who are in exile or in prison.
The chains will remain suspended across the river until Sunday afternoon. In addition to the spectacular sight of the installation, there are also a series of associated activities organized, including live music, afternoon snacks, vermouths and a cake competition.
Fundraising is also one of the goals. The installation's chains are open to sponsorship, to generate money for the political prisoners' solidarity fund. Anyone interested in taking part in this initiative can do so from 4pm on Sunday afternoon.
