Spanish unionist political party Ciudadanos has reacted to the decision of their MEP Carolina Punset to abandon the political group by sending her a disciplinary document to expel her from the party for having visited exiled Catalan president Carles Puigdemont on 9th October this year. Punset had announced on Saturday morning that she was leaving the party due to its "ultra-liberal" and "chauvinistic" drift, in a letter that was highly critical of the party's direction.
In response to this, Ciudadanos has taken disciplinary action against the MEP for her visit to Puigdemont in Waterloo on 9th October, a trip made using European Parliament resources. The action was taken by the party's disciplinary committee, which has the job of checking that Cs members' actions follow the party statutes.
For the moment, according to sources who spoke to the EFE news agency, no notification of Punset's intention to leave Ciudadanos has been received by the party.
