Shortly after Catalonia's new government had been formally sworn in on Saturday, and simultaneously with the holding of the government's first cabinet meeting, workers at the Catalan government palace, the Palau de la Generalitat, hung a banner on the building's façade calling for "Freedom for political prisoners and exiles’. Its message is written in both Catalan and English and accompanied by a yellow ribbon.

After president Torra was invested as new Catalan leader on 14th May, he announced that one of the first gestures he had planned was the display of a yellow ribbon on the façade of the Palau de la Generalitat. In the end, he waited until the government itself was constituted before ordering the positioning of the banner on the Generalitat's principal balcony, overlooking Barcelona's central Plaça Sant Jaume.
