Several social media users have today made comparisons between the carnations that were a symbol of the revolution in Portugal in 1974 and the carnations that some protesters today gave to members of the Civil Guard who were guarding the search of the offices of newspaper El Vallenc.

The 'Carnation Revolution' was the Portuguese movement that, in 1974, ended fifty years of the anti-democratic, dictatorial and repressive Estado Novo regime. The bloodless revolt's objective was to construct a new government with demands to develop industry and modernise the economy. The Portuguese revolution's anthem was the song Grândola, Vila morena
Other protesters offered water and Coca Cola to the Civil Guard agents, which they didn't accept.
