The president of the Catalan government, Carles Puigdemont, will make an official visit to Denmark on 30th and 31st August, one month before the celebration of the independence referendum on 1st October.
As Catalan government sources have confirmed, the journey will be for political purposes. The Nordic country, which has been a point of reference for Puigdemont's PDeCAT (Catalan European Democratic Party) and in particular for former president Artur Mas -who aims to turn Catalonia into the "Denmark of the south"-, has made several statements about the independence process.
In May 2015, the Danish Parliament passed a resolution which urged for dialogue between the Spanish and Catalan governments. Just this week, the newspaper Politiken has openly stated that the referendum will be a way to end "800 years of bitterness and fighting".
