The Spanish prime minister, Mariano Rajoy, will meet with the president of the United States, Donald Trump, in the White House, on 26th September. They will hold a bilateral summit including a meeting and then will give a joint press conference. The meeting will come five days before the Catalan independence referendum on 1st October.
According to Spanish government sources, the fact that the prime minister plans to go ahead with his scheduled foreign visits around 1st October shows the Spanish government's calm and belief that the referendum will not happen. Rajoy is also to travel to Estonia on 28th and 29th September for the Tallinn Digital Summit between European heads of state and government.
The spokesperson for the Spanish government, Íñigo Méndez de Vigo, said that the Spanish prime minister will dine with Trump and that the two will discuss topics like terrorism, relations between the EU and the US and bilateral economic relations between their countries.
