The Spanish prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, has communicated to the public this Wednesday through a letter that he is considering resigning from his position due to the accusations of corruption against his wife, Begoña Gómez. The Spanish Socialist (PSOE) leader has written a text addressed to all Spanish citizens in which he affirms that he has decided to cancel his agenda for the next few days, because he needs to "reflect" on whether he should continue at the head of the Spanish executive after a Madrid court decided to open proceedings against his partner for an alleged case of influence peddling. "I need to stop; I urgently need to answer the question of whether it is worth it, in spite of the filth which the right and the far right convert politics into; whether it is necessary to continue at the head of the government or to give up this great honour", he wrote in a letter published on his account in social media X (formerly Twitter). In this message, he also states that he will announce his final decision next Monday, April 29th. "Despite the caricature that the right and ultra-right political and media have tried to make of me, I have never felt a bond to the position," he says in his statement, adding that he is canceling his public schedule for a few days "to reflect and decide which path to take."
In his message, Pedro Sánchez rails against the People's Party (PP) and Vox because they are two "right and ultra-right" parties that "have never accepted" the result of the Spanish general election of July 23 last year. "Now, they have crossed the line of respect for the family life of a head of government and the attack on his personal life," he laments. In the same way, he takes aim at Alberto Núñez Feijóo and Santiago Abascal, leaders of those two parties, for having activated "the dirt machine" and for "trying to dehumanize and delegitimize the political opponent through scandalous and false accusations".
"At this point, the question I legitimately ask myself is whether it's all worth it. Honestly, I don't know; this attack is so serious that I need to stop and reflect with my wife," adds Sánchez in the letter, in which he setrs out in writing that he is "deeply in love" with Begoña Gómez, who is "impotently" living through "the dirt that they spread over her one day after another". This Wednesday, in the questions session of his government in the Congress of Deputies, Sánchez asserted that despite the information published, he continues to believe in Spanish justice.
In his letter, Sánchez makes the following analysis of the PP and Vox offensive against himself as PM and his wife: "A coalition of right-wing and ultra-right-wing interests that cannot tolerate the reality of Spain, that do not accept the verdict of the polls, and are willing to spread dirt in order to cover up their corruption scandals and their inaction in the face of those scandals; to hide their total absence of a political project beyond insult and misinformation; and to use all means at their disposal to politically and personally destroy their political adversary".
In defence of Begoña Gómez
The Socialist leader denounces that his partner is suffering an "unprecedented attack" after "the far-right organization" Manos Limpias (which translates as "Clean Hands") succeeded in getting a judge to open proceedings against Begoña Gómez. "The judge is going to call to testify the heads of two digital newspapers that have published on this case; they are media with a marked right-wing and ultra-right orientation," adds Sánchez in his statement, in which he assures that his wife "will defend her honour" and "will collaborate with justice in every way that is necessary." As Sánchez explains, the complaint is based on "alleged information from this constellation of ultra-conservative newspapers" that "we have been denying". He accuses the leaders of the PP and Vox of being "necessary collaborators" of this "far-right galaxy", and notes that PP leader Feijóo reported the case to the Office of Conflicts of Interest, which did not go anywhere because the office shelved the case.
"This is an operation of harassment by land, sea and air to make me fail politically and personally," says Sánchez. And he warns that he is not "naive" because he is aware that the attacks against Begoña Gómez only aim to attack what he represents: "A progressive political option, supported election after election, based on economic progress, social justice and democratic regeneration".
