The Spanish foreign ministry has confirmed the death of Maya Villalobo, the 19-year-old woman from Sevilla who was missing in Israel. Villalobo had dual Spanish-Israeli nationality and was doing her military service in Israel. The ministry expressed its deepest sadness and "all condolences to the family and loved ones". At the time of Saturday's attack by Hamas, Maya was at the Nahal Oz base, near the border with Gaza, doing mandatory military service. Israel's Nahal Oz base appears in several videos occupied by Hamas militants, who broke through the border fence.
At the moment, there is no news regarding the condition of the other Spaniard affected, Iván Illarramendi Saizar, who lived in Kibbutz Kissufim, also near Gaza. In his case, he disappeared after the Hamas attack with his Chilean wife. It was initially thought that both of the Spanish citizens unaccounted for were most likely to have been taken hostage by Hamas.
